COURT & LEGAL INTERPRETING

Independent Medical Examination Interpreting

An independent medical examination can require the interpreter to handle detailed medical history, symptoms, treatment, function and specialist terminology while remaining neutral within a legal or insurance context.

PROJECT FITIME and assessment appointmentsUseful for scheduled medical-legal assessments where the examinee and clinician do not share a working language.

The interpreter must stay neutral

The interpreter facilitates questions and answers between the examiner and examinee. They should not coach responses, advocate for either side or independently explain medical concepts beyond interpreting what is actually said.

Specialty affects terminology

Orthopaedic, psychiatric, neurological, chronic pain and other assessments use different terminology and examination styles. Identify the specialty so the interpreter can be matched to the assignment as appropriately as possible.

Scheduling and location

Provide the clinic or remote platform, appointment time, expected duration and any check-in requirements. If the examination includes testing or multiple providers, note that as part of the expected booking window.

Records and reports are separate translation work

Medical records supplied to the examiner and the resulting expert report may also need written translation. Those files should be scoped separately based on page count, terminology and intended use.

What to send when requesting availability or a quote

Send the appointment date and time, location or platform, language pair, medical specialty, expected duration, retaining organization and whether records or reports also require translation.

Questions about IME interpreting

Can an interpreter attend an IME in person?

Yes, subject to location and availability.

Can an IME be interpreted remotely?

It can when the examiner and retaining parties permit remote language support.

Does the interpreter explain medical questions?

The interpreter renders the examiner’s questions and the examinee’s answers; they do not replace the clinician or add independent advice.

Can the final expert report be translated?

Yes. Report translation is a separate written service.
